Examination of Robert TOOPE of Fordington, carpenter. Complained that he had followed one Edmund CHUB who was reputed to be the father of a base child born to one PIERCE spinster of Fordington, and overtook him at Chetnoll in the parish of Yetminster and had there apprehended him and given him into the charge of the tithingman, but during the night the tithingman had allowed CHUB to escape, and refused to raise the hue and cry after him on the grounds that he was not a felon.

[NOTE:- Margerye PIERCE had a bastard child she called Robert baptised in St Georges church Fordington on 20th Jan 1621]

THIS INDENTURE made the Twenty Ninth day of September in the year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second King of Great Britain and Soforth and in the year of our Lord One thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Three BETWEEN Israel SHEPHERD son of Isreal Shepherd of ffordington in the County of Dorset Worsted Comber And the said Israel Shephard the father of the one part and Ralph BULSPIN of Ffordington aforesaid weaver and Elizabeth his wife of the other part Witnesseth that the said Ispael Shepherd the son (by and with the consent and good liking of Israel Shepherd the father) Testify by his being made a party hereto hath put and placed himself an Apprentice unto the said Ralph BULSPIN and Elizabeth his wife to learn his art and trade and with them after the manner of an Apprentice to Dwell continue and serve from the day of the date hereof for and during the full end term of Seven Years thence next ensuring fully to be complete and Ended DURING which term the said Apprentice his said Master and Mistress faithfully shall serve their sonseneth keep their lawfull commands every where gladly do, he shall do no damage to the said Master or Mistress nor see to be done of others, But that he to his power shall set forth with give warning to his said Master or Mistress. He shall not waste the goods of his said Master and Misstress nor unlawfully lend them any person , He shall not commit fornication, nor contract matrimony within the said term, He shall not play at cards dice or any other unmlawful games whereby his said Master or Mistress may anywise receive damage , He shall neither buy nor sell without licence of his said Master or Mistress, He shall not haunt taverns or alehouses nor unlawfully absent himself from his said Master or Mistress Service either by day or night But in all things as a faithfull Apprentice shall behave himself towards his said Master & Mistress and all his during the said term AND THE SAID Ralph BULSPIN As well as for the considerations aforesaid as also of the sum of Five Pounds in Lawful Money to him in hand have paid by the said Israel SHEPHERD the father at and before the sealing and delivery hereof the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged and discharged DOTH hereby for himself and Elizabeth his wife , his executors and assigns covenant with the said Israel SHEPHERD the father and the said Apprentice, him the said Apprentice during the said term to teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed in the Art Mistery or Trade of a Weaver which he now useth in the best and skillfullist manner and way he or she can, And also during the said term fund provide and allow unto the said Apprentice sufficient meat drink washing lodging and all other nesessaries for an Apprentice for the due performance of the above agreements either of the said paries bindeth himself each to the other in the penal sum of Ten pounds of Lawful British money firmly by these presents IN WHITNESS whereof the said parties first above named to these presents Indentures interchangeably have set their hands and seals the day and year above written

Complaint being made unto this Court by the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Fordington in this County that Mary FUDGE of the Parish of Fordington in this County was on the 2nd day of January now last past delivered of a Female Bastard Child within the said Parish of Fordington and that James STEVENS late of the Parish of Forthington in the County of Dorset Labourer is charged to be the reputed Father of the said Bastard Child AND WHERAS the said James STEVENS hath now appeared in this Court to Answer the said charge whereupon and upon debate of the said matter and examining the said Mary FUDGE on Oath and upon hearing Council on the part of the said Parish and the defence of the said James STEVENS
and Considering the cause and circumstances of the premises THIS COURT doth hereby judge the said complaint to be true and the said Female Bastard Child to be now chargeable to the Parish of Fordington and likely so to continue and also him the said James STEVENS to be the reputed Father of the said Bastard Child AND this Court therefore as well for the better relief of the said parish of Forthington as for the relief support and maintenance of the said Bastard Child doth hereby Order that the said James STEVENS do and shall upon notice or Service of this order pay or cause to be paid unto the said churchwardens and overseers of the said Parish of Fordington the sum of One shilling and six pence of lawful money weekly and every week for henceforth for and towards the support and maintenance of the said Bastard Child for and during so long time as the said Bastard child be chargeable to the said parish of Fordington AND that the said Mary FUDGE the Mother do from the same time and in like manner so long as the said Bastard child shall as aforesaid be chargeable to the said Parish of Fordington in case she shall refuse to nurture the same also pay unto the churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the said parish of Fordington for the time being or to some of them weekly and every week the sum of nine pence of like lawful money to be by them applied for and towards the further support and maintenance of the said bastard child and in care of the Inhabitants of the said Parish of Fordington

The Examination of John HYDE of the parish of All Saints within the said Borough, Labourer taken on oath before his Majesty's Justices of the Peace of and for the said Borough the 27th day of June 1817.

Who sayeth that he is now about twenty two years of age and was born in the parish of Holy Trinity in Dorchester aforesaid as he has heard and belives to be trueand when young his late father Onesiphorus HYDE deceased removed therefrom with his family and resided in Fordington in the County and from thence this Examinant went and worked as a boy for Mrs CULL at Coker's Froome within the said parish of Holy Trinity under a weekly hiring for two shillings or thereabout per week wages for one or more years but the exact time he cannot recollect.

That after he had so worked for the said Mrs Cull his said late father made an agreement with her for this examinant (he being present) to serve her for for a year at so much per week wages but how much he can't say with certainty as his said late father or mother always received the wages to their own use and under such yearly hiring this examinant continued in the said Mrs CULL's Service for some years and that he believes his wages were advanced towards the latter part thereof, but to what amount he does not at this time recollect.

That during the whole time he worked for the said Mrs CULL both as a weekly and yearly Servant he took his diet with his said late fatherand lodged in his house in Fordington, since which he this examinant has done no no Act whatsoever whereby he gain a settlement in any parish or place and that he is now out of employand in want of relief and hath been relieved by the Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of All Saints

And also saith that he has a wife named Rebecca and one child aged about 11 months named Elizabeth residing with him in the same parish.

When they were married they went to live at 15 Limehouse Causway for 4 months with Mrs Johnson then 18 Hine St Poplar (Clara was born here see above) about 12 months with Mrs Wilkinson: 11 Rich st Limehouse 4 months with Mrs Johnson; 3 Gun Lane (Annie was born here) 2 years with Mrs Gudge left in July or August 1882 (See Mrs Gudges Statement) 118 Croydon Road, Barking Road few months with Mrs Phillips; 6 nankin St Poplar 2 years; 5 Woodstock Road silvertown 6 months with Mrs Marshall; 134 Gays Inn Road, Custom House 6 months with Mrs Harrison; 27 Bidden St canning Town 6 weeks with Mrs Mason; 77 Bidden St Canning Town 18 months with Mrs Williams; 73 Grundy St poplar 1 month; 22 Wade St Poplar 1 month Then the Poplar Workhouse.

Previous to his marriage the man had no regular home, only took lodgings at a boarding house when at home and never paid rent while away. Woman before marriage was living at Plumstead with brother from about November 1877 before in the service of Mrs Coghlan High Street Poplar for about 7 or 8 months (see Mrs Coghlans statement) before about 6 months at plumstead with Mrs Harry Balster (See her statement) before at the Golden Cross Hotel Charing Cross about 6 months here about Feb 1876 before at Plumstead.

Was in the service of Mr F Jelly Brookhill Road Brookhill park Plumstead for about 2 years left about 12 years ago. Search at somerset House shows that Eliza BALSTER was born 9th Feb 1851 of parents Stephen and Susan BALSTER at Holloway Row in the parish of Fordington in the Dorchester Union. (this was admitted) Witnesses of Bush brothers; Harry Balster 55 Speranga St Plumstead; herbert BALSTER Boatman Margate; john BALSTER Plumstead Common Cottages Plumstead

Statement by Mrs GUDGE: 11 Gun lane Limehouse states that Eliza GEORGE whose husband was a blackman lived with her at 3 Gun Lane for about 2 years her child Annie was born there and she left when she was a few months old viz July or August 1882 Previous to living with her she lived with Mrs Johnson in Rich Street and when she left she went to canning town with a Mrs Phillips. + many more papers relating to the case See Times Newspaper 31st May 1888
